Does anyone know where you can get mock duck in town? I've been to a few different Whole Foods and health food places, and everyone I ask goes, "Mock... what?" It's like seitan; it comes in a can; it's essentially wheat gluten and is also sometimes called vegetarian duck. Anybody know where I can get it?

Additionally, Fantastic Foods used to make a really yummy vegetarian sloppy joe mix that I can no longer find anywhere. Whole Foods in Union Square used to carry it but no longer does; anyone seen it lately? (Your favorite vegetarian sloppy joe recipes are also welcome.)

I've been debating it for a while. I just hit my 2 million np mark, so I can afford it...I just can't decide XP I love zapping pets, it's always a fun gamble. What do you guys think? Anyone here have one up for trade? I rather buy from someone here.
Also hows the GMC going for everyone? I have my 20/20 now for today so I'm doing pretty good. The games have been pretty darn easy for far, and the prizes are interesting. Whats your favorite prize so far? =D I like the Coltzan Negg...no real reason why except I think it looks kind of cool!

An earlier post about a story in an Alfred Hitcock collection reminded me of these two short stories:

In the first one, a family has a birdhouse(?) or maybe a toy house (?) and they become aware that some kind of tiny creatures have moved into it. IIRC they never actually see them, but every morning someone is leaving tiny bottles of purple milk on the little house's doorstep, and I think maybe a newspaper too?

I'm not sure if they bring luck or what, but somehow the family gets too intrusive on their little neighbors and one day there's a little sign hanging in the window: "TO LET." Maybe something bad happens after that?
It may have been in a Hitchcock collection.

The second one I read in junior high and I got the distinct impression that this story collecion was not intended for that age group. In the story I'm trying to remember a man moves into an apartment below the female narrator. I can't remember much except that as the story progresses it becomes clear that he is an incubus.
I think at some point a neighbor is trying to pump her for details and says something like "So cold they say, and big as a bull's." (Woo-hoo!)
He also had a really odd name.

ONE FOUND: The first story is Henry Kuttner's "Housing Problem.: I probably read it in "Alfred Hitchcock's Ghostly Gallery."

So far as I can tell, I might've just made this whole thing up. In the years I've been wondering what it was I read, I haven't been able to find it. Hopefully someone here recognizes it and can confirm it's a real book. :)

It's a young adult/kids science fiction book with a female main character. I also remember that several chapters started with a countdown, and that the girl, and her friend(s) lived on a spaceship or space station. I really don't remember anything about the actual story, I just really remember liking the main character, and I think there was a series, at least two or three books about the same girl. I read this in the early 90s, but it's possible it was written in the 80s. I also really want to say that it was a female author and that the author's last name started with an 'S' (but don't hold me to that).

Can anyone clarify how exactly this is rude or disrespectful cuz I'm not getting it.

Went to Thanksgiving at my uncle's place yesterday. It was potluck style where everyone brought something. When I helped my mom host Thanksgiving before, even when we had no one bring anything and we made the entire huge ass meal on our own dime if anyone asked for leftovers they were likely to get them.

My husband and I were asked to bring dessert which we did. Later in the evening I asked if I could take some of the leftovers home. I asked my aunt who gave me permission to do so. There were tons of leftovers and I wasn't taking much just barely enough for two servings. There were like 32 or more servings left of all the food. When I asked for a few ziplock bags from my uncle he FLIPPED OUT AND YELLED AT ME! Even after I explained that I had asked his wife who told me it was fine. I mean he kept yelling and shouting and saying awful things to me until he had me in tears. Later before I leave my aunt apologized for my uncle's behavior and gave me a big bag full of leftovers. I accepted them and headed out the door with my family. My uncle saw this and said nothing last night as I hugged him goodbye.

This morning I get a call from my mom who had gotten a very angry call from my uncle. He said I was being disrespectful by asking for leftovers and even more disrespectful by taking them!!

Now I have my grandfather (who is a jerk in general anyway) telling me I owe my uncle an apology. My mother and grandmother think my uncle and grandfather are nutty and if anything my uncle should apologize for flying off the handle at me as my aunt gave the apology after she asked my uncle who told her she could go F- herself because he will apologize to people when he feels like it.

So manners check please? And yes I realize my family is messed up.

I am taking a 10 vacation with the babe and no laundry beyond washing out in the sink, so CD is out for the duration. I was looking at the disposable g-diaper and Flip inserts. How do these attach into the covers? It looks like at least the Flip inserts stick in like a maxi pad. Could I use my existing PUL covers (assorted thirsties, bummis, and imse vimse) with these or would I need to buy g-pants and/or the Flip covers? They don't really say in the advertisements that I've seen. From a packing stand point, it seems that packing inserts would be even better than trying to pack a full set of sposies, and I can re-wash covers easy enough. It only works price wise though if my existing covers will work with the inserts.

So I just signed up for the 15 day trial (I guess I have to do that before I can pay them for a while month) and was poking around the Premium portal. I saw I had some unread mail in my shiny new neopets webmail, but of course since I just started, it wanted me to log in to look at them.

Except I can't.

Firefox IMMEDIATELY freezes the moment it gets to the webmail login page. I've tried hitting the stop button before it can completely load, no go. I've tried updating my firefox, no go. I've tried clearing my cache, no go. I'm using FF 3.5.5 now. It just completely locks up my browser and I have to force it to restart.

Is this a known problem? Is there anything I can do other than use another browser JUST for neopets, which I really don't want to do? I don't know if I'll continue premium (sorry to my referrer!) if I can't use firefox to get to my webmail, that's kind of ridiculous.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- USA is shaking up its January plans as its original series "White Collar," "Burn Notice" and "Psych" will each now occupy their own nights.

Advance listings released by the network today indicate "White Collar" will launch the back half of its freshman run on Tuesday, January 19 at 10:00/9:00c with "Burn Notice" resuming its third season on Thursday, January 21 at 10:00/9:00c.

"Psych" will then round out the trio when its fourth season returns Wednesday, January 27 at 10:00/9:00c.

Said lineup will give USA original scripted programming at 10:00/9:00c on Tuesdays ("White Collar"), Wednesdays ("Psych") and Thursdays ("Burn Notice").

The news marks a significant shift from the network's usual drama homes which have been limited to Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays in recent years.

I was listening to a British reporter on the radio today, who was in South Africa. He said he had learned an interesting thing about Afrikaans, i.e.that it was the only language in the world that had no English words. There was a special committee, and they decided on an Afrikaans equivalent for any English words they needed.

At first I was thinking, I don't believe that. The reporter doesn't speak Afrikaans and it sounds like an urban myth.

But as he spoke, it turned out he was talking only about Cricket. All the sports commentators apparantly have to use Afrikaans words for all the cricket terms, so a committee works out Afrikaans equivalents for things like 'follow on', 'maiden over', 'Night Watchman', etc. etc. etc.

That seems plausible, (think of L'Académie française! ... think of how TV news stations work out standards so all their news readers pronounce names in the same way) and if it's true it's very interesting.

I'm interested in trying Premium and have just gotten a bit of commission money. Could anyone give me a referral?

Since i've posted here about my extreme envy of those who drop cash on NC cards like it is nothing a time or two (or a dozen.. sorry, envy is ugly), i thought i would share this happy event.

i don't know what to buy!

also, while i'm here i thought i'd ask about trading NC items (since Neo gave out those free gift boxes) it would be the firs time i've ever done it. i have been hoarding all the prize-emitting goodie bag giveaways all year, starting with the swirly neggs, but also including the NC Mall b-day bags, the halloween bags.. umm.. that's all i can remember right now. what i'm wondering is..

is there any possible chance of getting a Rainbow Uni Horn (my super dream NC item, the root of all this ugly NC envy,LOL) as a trade for any of these goodie bags? how do you determine a 'trade value' for an NC item?

In my novel, my story takes place in a fictional town in Alaska named Lincoln. The population of said town is 400 residents, so it's pretty small. It's in Northern-ish Alaska, so there aren't very many people around. The town is based on Wales, Alaska, a real town with 200 people. (Yay for a graduating class of 3 in 2008).

My questions are 1) What are reasons which people would live far away from town? My main character's love interest lives thirty miles away from town. I was thinking of a farm, but what farmers are in Alaska? What do they farm? Would a ranch of any sort be practical? (Probably not with the cold.)

2) How would lunches work in a school with less than 52 students? Schools are required to provide lunch for students correct? So how would the school do that?

3) My character previously lived in New York City, in a pretty worn down and dangerous part. What's the worst you can get for that sort of thing? My character has an older sister and his mother (who works as a waitress because she can't get a better job). The crappier the better. It's preferably better if it's scary as I want it to be a factor of mental disorders later in his life.

4) Are music schools probable or would an art academy be a better choice? I want my character to go to a music/art school, but I don't know if there are purely musical focus high schools or if there are only art academies. Edit: This school is in New York.

The other half (aka shove_this_job is applying for a fiancee visa to join me in the UK. I understand that I, as the sponsor, will need to provide a shedload of supporting documents (passport, bank statements, mortgage, wage slips etc.)

- Do I provide originals or notarized copies?
- Will these be sent in the post or will she present them at an interview at the Chicago consulate?
- Should I (as the Brit) prepare to go to an interview somewhere in the UK to support her application? Do I then need to bring my original versions of these supporting documents?
- Is there a definitive list of these supporting documents?

Okay. I need help finding something. But this might not be an easy one.

So. There's this book. I read it a few years ago, and I guess I forgot about it. But the past month or so I keep remembering more and more about it. Like, I'll remember a tiny little detail every day. I want to find this book, but I just can't. I can't recall any names from the book. However, the word "Runaways" is ringing a bell. I'm not sure if it's the title but I think the word may have been mentioned in the book a lot. Here's some scattered details. Some of these details MAY NOT BE TOTALLY RIGHT, because my memory's fuzzy and I read a LOT.

-Post apocalyptic, or at least set in the future.
-Kids who are 'no good' can basically be signed off by their parents to go to this place where they're deconstructed so their organs can be used to help other people.
-Two kids find out that this is happening to them and try to escape. [may have been one kid and his friend, not two kids?]
-There's this one kid who has part of a brain from another kid and he compulsively steals things, but he doesn't mean to and is ashamed about it.
-the two kids that escape are directed to this slummy thing by some lady, and then shipped off in crates after a while. One of the kids is sleazy and is after a girl there. Some other guy constantly tries to protect her.
-Not all of them survive the crates
-The crates ship them to some 'camp' thing for kids [runaways?] who have escaped the other place.
-There's this evil doctor or person of authority who everybody is scared of. He [she?] assigns one of the kids as their helper. I think they have a truck. And maybe people who go into the truck don't come out? Something like that.
-In the end, one kid is 'deconstructed' whilst the main female character plays music.

HELP ME. I NEED TO FIND THIS SHIT. GOOGLE DOESN'T WORK.

In movies, when surprised or perplexed with a hint at being in trouble, a character, especially a young one (often a kid), would utter an interjection that might be transcribed as [ɒ'əʊ] with the tone falling down towards the second syllable (hope I made myself clear enough).

How can it be spelt?

He thinks the title was something like "Son Wanted", and that the poem was not a recent poem but at least from the 20th century, from an American poet. He thinks it was an anonymous poem, and that the speaker was longing for an older time when kids were more obedient, where apparently he or she could have the son he wanted - a dutiful child who would do his chores, take care of his homework, etc.

Is this sounding familiar or recognizable to anyone?

One was about a gargoyle or gryphon. It had wings IIRC and there was a picture of it perched on the corner of a building. It may well have been a short story in amongst a novel full of them. I'm pretty sure it flew around doing stuff.

Another one was about werewolves. A family move into a new neighbourhood and the son befriends a regular person. I am fairly sure the family was all 'infected.' The son invites the boy over and the boy is shocked to see the family eating rare (raw?) meat. This one and the above would have been read while I was at school, so 1980's.

Third one is a cook book (many thanks to the poster asking about hers, I wouldn't have thought to ask about that here). It is an Australian, maybe even Tasmanian, one about what the early settlers used to cook. In it there were recipes to cook native hens (add to a pot of veges with a rock, cook for hours, toss hen out and eat rock), and wallabies, make browning and a recipe of sorts to make your own yeast. This one is less than 15 years old and had only like 50 pages, if that.

I'm not expecting miracles about these because they are so impossibly vague and maybe too local.

Okay, I have two questions.

1. If people suspected that a woman who was married had a child with someone else, because of the child's appearance (ex. dark auburn hair and brown eyes from a blond-haired blue-eyed set of parents) how would the child and the mother be treated in about 1959 to about 1967? I'm having trouble figuring out how to google it and am not coming up with anything.

2. The hippie movement in the UK. Wiki says that they had "peace convoys" and went to musical festivals at Stonehenge, but doesn't give much more information, when did the movement really come to the UK? Would the term "hippie" still be used, or is "New age traveller" more appropriate? Wiki seems to say that these were more popular in the 1980s, and if they had a permanent home and didn't travel constantly, would it still be a proper term?

I learned that the peace symbol came from the UK and was embraced by the US, but was it widely used to mean peace in the UK or just nuclear disarmament?
